FYI: Use an in-country online travel seller to snag a great deal

* I just received my Smarter Travel newsletter & thought it appropriate for this tribe. Hope it helps! *

Sometimes, when traveling internationally, it pays to think locally—with local websites and travel providers, that is.

Heading to an Asia-Pacific destination? Check out Zuji, a Travelocity company that specializes in deals to and within Australia, Hong Kong, India, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan. If you're hunting down deals for London and beyond, bypass standard U.S. consolidators and check out the U.K. affiliates of Expedia and Travelocity, or compare prices with our sister company Booking Buddy.co.uk Priceline also operates a European affiliate, Booking.com.

For airfare, check European low-cost providers such as easyJet and Ryanair. Both offer great possibilities for connecting flights once you've arrived on the Continent. Momondo, a Danish travel company, offers metasearch possibilities, often including low-cost carriers in its search results.

If you're researching train travel, Eurostar, Rail Europe, and Eurail are great places to get started, or Google your destination country and "train passes" for in-country links.

Lastly, an in-country travel agent may know of local providers and deals that you couldn't find on your own. Getting in touch with a country or region's tourism board can often provide contacts in that arena.

Like any good bargain travel hunter, be sure to compare what you find on local travel sites against U.S. companies. You also may need to do a bit of converting from local currencies to U.S. dollars to ensure you're getting a good deal.

Have a great travel tip you'd like to share? Send your insider travel strategies to editor@smartertravel.com.

(Editor's Note: SmarterTravel.com is a member of the TripAdvisor Media Network, an operating company of Expedia, Inc. Expedia, Inc. also owns Expedia.com.)

traveling to Tibet?

This is still very much in the "gee, what do you think?" stage of discussion, but I might be headed to Tibet after Thanksgiving with a friend...

I'd like to get a feel for what is in store, in terms of ballpark figures for flights, if we do decide to go to Tibet. But that involves figuring out *where* to enter Tibet - through Nepal or through China.

Which is cheaper to fly into from California - Nepal or China? Easier? (Hopefully both, at the same time!)

Does anyone know of a credible website where you can get low cost tickets in exchange for courier service? I'm in Guatemala now and a girl told me it's possible to fly super cheap if you only have one carry on and take other people's stuff as checked baggage. I'm looking to fly to Asia in the spring and would love to save money if possible, any input is appreciated. Thanks, Melody

So a lot of people on here have been pushing Vayama, but I've found that cheapoair.com gets me tickets for $300-400 less. Is Vayama mostly europe? This also makes me feel that maybe there's an even cheaper site out there I don't know about yet. Does anyone know of one?

€650/week Paris (Montmartre) Apartment for weekly Rental

Why rent an impersonal hotel room when you can have your own romantic place all to yourself? Experience Paris like a true Parisian, buying your baguette from the corner boulangerie, etc. Will make your stay in Paris unforgettable.

The apartment is extremely charming and romantic. It is like stepping back in time. The building dates from the 1700s. The apartment has its own entrance and is on the ground floor. It has one bedroom and sleeps 2 – 4 comfortably. There is a double bed in the bedroom and the living room has a fold-out couch. Fully-equipped kitchen.

The best thing about it is the neighborhood. You will be located in the center of the most interesting neighborhood, Montmartre, the spectacular hill with the Sacre Coeur church on top of it where Picasso, Braque and Maurice Utrillo lived, loved and painted. We are 2 blocks from the Amalie Poulain Café and 3 blocks from the Moulin Rouge, 4 blocks to the Sacre Coeur.

Discover this charming neighborhood full of steep, narrow streets, staircase streets, alleyways, quiet cafes, bohemians and artists. It is a breath of fresh air, far above the bustle of the large avenues, yet close to all the major attractions in this vital city.

The apartment is available for rent on a weekly basis at €650 a week.

Does anyone have any advice? Does anyone wanna meet up in Manila/Bagkok/Jakarta? Kayak.com is good yea? Is it the best? I'll fly an hour of the day and I am flexible by about 3 days in either direction. Thanks.

So I have a trip planned to New Zealand in January, and when I checked airfare a few weeks ago it would have been $1500 or so. This week the price quote is $2080. I know that prices fluxuate, and last year I purchased my ticket to Costa Rica at $200 higher than it was the next week. Does anyone know of a 'good time' to buy tickets, should I take the normal route of buying ASAP or wait a week or two more?

the tunnel tour beneath the kotel is really worth it, but you pretty much have to arrange tickets in advance (they're only a few dollars but they're sold out sometimes weeks in advance)... www.aish.com/seminars/tunneltours/

Bay Area to Peru for cheap?

Hi, all--

Anyone have any secrets for tickets to Peru from any of the Bay Area's airports, including favorite local consolidators? I'm planning a last-minute trip for work in early October, and I don't have the kind of experience in South America that I have in other parts of the world, so I'm kind of guessing here.

I've tried Kayak, and it looks like my cheapest option, TACA, is still going to be close to $600 R/T at this point. Does that sound like about as good as I can do, or can I do better?

Gracias!

a cheap flight from LA to israel

first of all.... did anyone ever tried air-hitch.org? i still havent got an answer about that.

second.... i am looking for a flight around january to israel from around LA - maybe utah.
i just looked to check what are the prices now and i have come up with 608$ dollars.
i dont need a return ticket and i have no problem with having lots of fractions on the way, if the cheapest way for example, is to go to boston or new-york and take another flight from there to israel.

cheers,
Mickey

I'm looking for a travel partner. Age, race, and sex do not matter. However, I'm on a budget and I do everything the cheapest way possible. I require that you join this online community called "Couchsurfing" (www.couchsurfing.com) it's free, and it basically puts you in touch with people willing to let you sleep on their couch instead of paying for a hotel room. I've used it twice and have had amazing experiences.

Where I'd like to go... I want to go to Vancouver. Or Mexico some where. In the long haul, I want to spend a couple MONTHS over in Europe and eventually travel to Australia. I'm pretty open to suggestions though. I have a passport. I'm free to go whenever after Oct 28th of this year., I'm actually volunteering in Yellowstone National Park until then. If I don't get any reposnes from this, I'll be flying to New York at the 28th, just for a heads-up.

About me... you can look at my profile, or at a glance, I'm female, 22, and I'm a photographer. I used to be a bar-tender so I'd consider myself pretty easy to get along with. All of my friends are guys, although I get along well with women, I guess I just relate more to laid-back people(I've found that many women are drama-ridden).

I'm getting sick of typing. So if you're at all interested, let's chat.

I just joined this tribe to see if anyone has any clear advice for me about flying stand by. I'm heading from BC to the Midwest in October, and am trying to find flights from Chicago to Sao Paulo, and from Buenos Aries to Maui. I am completely flexible with dates and have slept much worse places than airports, but I just don't really know how to go about getting standby tickets. Will it actually be cheaper than booking in advance? Can I request a general time frame for a standby ticket? Any info would be wonderful. Thanks!

Hello. I'm planning to go to Brussels some time in October for a few days, for say 19/10 to 22/10. A friend of mine who's been doing this for years told me I can find tickets for just 7 euros no tax one way. I looked for this price in some key sites, but I found nothing. Any ideas or suggestions? ^^

Hi all,

I would like to do a three week Europe trip, hopefully hitting London, Paris, Prague, Amsterdam, and Dublin. I plan to travel in late April/early May. I would like to be in Paris for May 1, but that is not a requirement.

Since I have some flexibility here, I would like to aim for the cheapest rates and least crowds (wouldn't everybody). So here are my questions:

1) What European city has the lowest airfare from LAX? I would like to use London or Paris, how much more for them?

2) What days of the week allow for the lowest airfares?

3) Are there any fare changes in the month of May? For example, should I try to get back earlier in the month?

4) How do I find out where I can go with a rail pass?

5) How do I price the side trips, like London-Dublin?

6) How do I price and reserve lodging?

Thank you very much in advance for your helpful hints.

Cheers,
-tom

Hey I was just reading through the Financing your Travels thread over on the Practical Nomads Tribe (here if you haven't seen it)

http://practicalnomad.tribe.net/thread/7ba4318d-a30c-46df-84e6-a658ec1e32eb

and have a quick idea for people who want to make some easy money.

So I just started working at Google in the user interface department (I'm actually saving for a trek from Chile to Argentina in January, ping me if you have any suggestions!). My job is basically to look at how people interact with new products to figure out what we should change/tweak/dump. Right now my department is having a big problem, Google is making awesome new toys so fast that we can't find enough people to test them out. In fact, we're having so much trouble that we just bumped up pay rates for beta testers which now range from $250-$75 an hour (granted it's usually 75-100). Beta Testers typically visit an office in Silicon Valley, Seattle Area, Santa Monica, or NYC but I think there are also offices in london, beijing and hyderabad that do some testing.

Here's the cool thing, we also do tests that are ONLINE so you can sign up from anywhere, perfect for the practical nomad or somebody who wants to have some extra cash for the round trip flight :) I'm pretty sure that the range for online tests is a little bit lower, $40-$200 per study but I've traveled in Asia, India, Africa, Europe, and South America and I know that even $40 extra dollars is enough to keep people from going back to the cube/suit/whatever for at least a few days.

Here's how it works, follow the link, sign up and someone from google will contact you if you fit the criteria for a study.

https://survey.google.com/wix/p0822776.aspx?referral_code=TR2

and I'm not trying to spam this forum, I've been a strong member of tribe since 04 and I love the community here. This is definitely an insider opportunity and I'd be happy to know that it went to someone experiencing the kind of international adventures we all live for :)

also, if you meet somebody who needs cash you can just tell them to go to

google.com/usability

(easy to remember!) and ask them to mention that they heard about it from tribe (there's a little box in the survey). You're also welcome to email this to lists or post in other forums if it's relevant or you think people would be into the idea. I created a referral code (TR2) but it doesn't really matter as long as you mention tribe.

So that's the deal, if you have any questions you can message me. In general we're looking for people over 18 who aren't programmers or ui designers.

Cheers and Safe Travels!

Hi
I read the question regarding the one way ticket to Bangkok. I have the same question except to China. I am going there to teach English. So I have an "F" visa as oppossed to a tourist visa. Would I be able to buy a one way ticket with that type of visa. I have not been able to get a hold of anyone at the China consulate in Chicago. Does anyone know if I would be able to buy a one way ticket with a "F" visa? Also my situation is the same as Melody. Once I am finished teaching. I am not sure when I will be returning, plus it was too expensive to buy a round trip ticket.

Thanks

I am flying from SF to Bangkok around the beginning of December. Since I plan on traveling to other countries and being gone at least 9 months I want to buy a one-way ticket. I know some countries require an onward ticket but I'm not to sure about Thailand. I really don't want to buy a return ticket since it is unlikely I will be flying back from Thailand. Any ideas out there? Also any recommendations on cheap airfare ideas would be appreciated. Most of the one ways I've seen are around 900$ so that is a bit pricey. Does anyone have any experience with open ended return tickets? Thanks, Melody

India: Is the season to blame?

Hey, all,

I just happened to try a Kayak search for tickets from the Bay Area to India leaving in late January '08 and returning a few weeks later, and I was surprised to find nothing for less than around $1400, which seems fairly steep. I've never flown to India from the States before, so I guess I don't know what to expect.

Is this just a typical high season price? Am I likely to find anything cheaper if I adjust by a few weeks? Any other advice?

I'm inclined to wait a few months and start checking with bucket shops.

Good fare to London/ passport updates

I'm new to this...

Any tips for the best air fare from western US to London??

I'm in Reno but could easily travel to San Francisco or even to San Diego
(where i have friends to visit anyway) If I could get a better fare from a larger hub.

Is travel from one airport cheaper than some of the others? and any Airline recommendations?
Also timing.... I assume summer is the highest fare time....any month that's the lowest?

I'm reluctant to book until I have my passport in hand anyway.

(I applied early April) and the web site indicates 10-12 weeks but from what I hear it's longer..
Been 14 weeks now for me....but they tell me...soon.....

Thanks.

New air travel Passport rules

Does anyone know if the new passport rules on air travel between Canada and the USA are really in effect? I want to fly from Vancouver to SFO in Feb and don't have a passport. I copied the official rule from the State Dept web site below.

Under the/ /Western Hemisphere/ /Travel Initiative (WHTI)

The proposed implementation timeline has two phases:

* Beginning *January 23, 2007*, ALL persons, including U.S.
citizens, traveling by *air* between the United States and Canada,
Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will
be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S.
Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration
Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
* As early as *January 1, 2008*, ALL persons, including U.S.
citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central
and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by *land* or *sea*
(including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport
or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland
Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later
deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are
working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample
advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain
passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Hi all. I am planning a very long overland trip from China to Egypt. I will have to fly from Pakistan to Turkey to avoid Iran since getting a visa or paying for a guide (200$ per day) is too expensive.

I'll be cycling part of the way, so it would be nice to buy my ticket when I arrive in Islamabad. If it isn't much more expensive, that is.

Does anyone know if this is a bad idea? Or should I get the flight in advance, which pressures my itenerary.

Thanks!

my sweetie and i just decided to do this trip. we haven't gotten tix yet or laid out plans but hope to soon. dear fellow travelers: anything to share on tix, routes, etc.? we're hoping to fly into one and out of the other without extra expense. we also see how many options we have: SF --> Lisbon, SF --> London, Frankfurt, Paris, etc. --> Porto, and on and on.

has anyone done this or figured it out?

i thought i'd pass on a tidbit of advice. Check out bootsnall travel, they have a good website and offer the cheapest international fares i've found. Also, they arn't at all shady, which is pretty much a requirement for me to give anyone a credit card number.
so, i dunno their website, but google them, you won´t be disappointed

If you've been waiting for the right moment to buy your flight to Costa Rica for the Honkytonk Homeslice Hoedown (3 nights with Bill Nershi's Honkytonk Homeslice + members of The String Cheese Incident, Railroad Earth, Hot Buttered Rum, Rowan/Rice Quartet, Leftover Salmon & The Drew Emmitt Band, see below for details)...THIS IS IT!!!

I was just searching http://www.kayak.com to see where airfares were at and found out that there's a big sale going on. Fares are WAY down, this is about as inexpensive as it *EVER* gets to fly to Costa Rica.

These are leaving 5/4 and returning 5/13, round trip, including tax:

Hello.
Just wanted to share with everyone that we just got some tickets from Portland, Oregon to Oslo, Norway for $500 a piece...
We used the web site Economytravel.com and are flying with Lufthansa all the way, with only one lay over in Frankfurt, both ways.
We are leaving on March 28th.
The final price for 2 adults after taxes and fee's were added came to about $1600
(Most airlines charges more than that for one person, before taxes and fee's)

seeking advice on subtropical places to go in april where i won't be soaked the whole time....

the original plan was costa rica, but april seems like bad timing for that spot since i'll be spending so much of my time outdoors and the rain may be ruthless.....

soooo i'm shooting for some other place. out of the country. kinda warm. affordable plane tickets. affordable cost of living. somewhat safe for a lady traveling on a super tight no hotel sorta budget. some places i'm considering.....

the dominican republic
puerto rico
cayman islands
anywhere in south america
peru
anywhere really.

i don't know shit about any of these places. any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Iceland Air has amazing last-minute deals every so often (round-trip from JFK to Reykjavik for under $400! wtf?), but sadly they only fly out of the east coast of the US. Which means to take advantage I'd have to find my way cheaply from the San Francisco bay area to Boston or JFK, which ends up costing as much as the flight to Iceland itself. Any suggestions for finding very cheap east-west cross-US flights so I can continue on to Iceland?

(I've looked at southwest & jetblue so far, both in the $300-400 range.)

travel in mexico? know the beautiful places?

Hi, first i'd like to say that this has to do more with the destination rather than how im getting there. I have some airline credit thats already paid for, i'm just having trouble deciding the most ideal place to go.
I'm thinking Mexico or Guatemala.
I'm a 20 year old hip, animal loving student that has traveled internationally with parents, but never alone, as i will, in January, right after Christmas.
Dates, times, locations are flexible.
I'd like to go somewhere that i can sleep outside and is relatively safe. THat i can eat from the trees, lounge on coasts, bathe in the oceans, see ruins and archaeological sites, and not spend very much money having the greatest time of my life. There are places like this, im almost posative. It;s a rather simple goal to achieve i think and feel.
So, What i am asking you is, Based on these things, Have you gone somewhere that offers such marvels?
I checked out Cabo San LUcas and it looked beautiful, very resorty, but beautiful.
TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW, EVERYTHING IS WELCOME!! THANK YOU SO MUCH BEAUTIFUL ADVENTURERS!! and blessed be.

i'm planning a trip to central america sometime in april. i want to buy a round trip ticket, but i don't want to be bound to a specific return date. i know i will be gone at least a month, and i really want to leave myself open to staying longer if circumstances allow.

so, are there any search engines i can use where i can leave the return date open ended? or international airlines that allow you to change travel dates after you've purchased your ticket?

any info at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

But maybe you had to be there. Oh well. :-D

my folks are coming out from the midwest(to west coast) to visit and my sister and i have decided it would be better to take a trip somewhere w/ activities rather than sit around and eat and get wasted, which then causes political/religious fights.

we'll be flying out of reno. mexico is expensive that time of year (mid-may, which kind of surprised me). They are older, but not laxy by any means(so not mountain climbing). Can't be too roughin it too much either.

thoughts?

actually, even w/in the US is ok.

I notice Kayak's features are now available for international flights! I especially like the 90 day graph of past prices for the airfare.

Ever since Travelocity lost the ability to do flexible international searches (over several months) I've been hoping for a good mainstay replacement. I'm still not decided if that's Kayak yet or not. I haven't booked anything with their help just yet.

I'm wondering if most of you purchase the flight insurance that some of the ticketing web sites offer? If so, have you ever had to use it and was it worth it? Or, is it a waste of money? Does purchasing a ticket with a credit card give you any guarantees?

Airfare Wire: Legit?

Anyone ever used www.airfarewire.com? I'm looking around for a deal from SFO to PNH this winter, and they've got what seem like impossibly low quotes, marked with the conveniently powerful disclaimer "Subject to Availability."

I assume that means that when I actually call them, they'll offer something much higher?

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Screwed up name on cheap international air ticket: to fix, or not?

Hey, all...

I just booked a supercheap ticket between BKK and PNH on the Southwest Airlines of Malaysia, Air Asia. Couldn't be happier with the price, and the schedule works very well for us, too, so all is well. EXCEPT: They've got my first name where my last name should be on the ticket! (I'm listed as Mr. Lastname Daniel rather than Mr. Daniel Lastname). I was pretty sure I didn't fill the form out wrong, but I guess must have done.

So what do you think -- do I need to call/email the airline, or shall I just take my chances at Suvarnabhumi Intl?

I'm going to Thailand for New Years!! Awww yeaaah!!! :) :) This is assuming I can find a reasonably-priced flight, which we want to purchase tomorrow. We're leaving around Chrismas and coming back sometime between Jan 11th - 15th. Any advice you'd like to share? Cheap airfare deals, etc, etc? We were thinking of flying San Francisco to Bangkok - round trip. Do you think it'd be a better idea to fly into Bangkok and fly out of Phuket or vice versa? We don't have any kind of itinerary yet.

Thanx!!! :) :)
