cheap flights between Bali and OZ...

I will be staying in Bali for 2 months this coming Jan-Mar. I would love to get down to Australia for the Rainbow serpent festival for about a week and then return to Bali. I was looking all over online and couldn't find anything for less than $500 / $600. I thought since Oz and Bali are so close that it wouldn't be so expensive...

does anyone have any suggestions for cheap travel between these 2 places?
