A student visa is good.

Did you check out the Homeland Security page about the biometric passport and the entrance form?
But if you are Belgian it may be different since the EEC is situated there, this you really should check out for yourself. Go on line to their site.

But if you are flying before the January 1st, no problem.

JM mentioned prices are good right now,
There's a great bar-b-que place in Jack London square in Oakland. They also have a great art school there! Hey succes, Wim.

Hell, in that case, I'd just book now.
There's a rumor prices will drop this week because less people have been buying tickets for the holidays, but if you're leaving in a couple of weeks, I'd just go ahead and buy now so you don't have to worry about it any more. Prices are always lower for after the first week of january, anyway.

Thanks a lot E.S.S. for your extensive answer.
I'll take a little more time to explain my situation later, I wanna know what you think about it.
- I have a student visa..

JoyfulMary,

"are supposed to drop this week or next"
Could you please extend your answer. I never heard anything about that. Does it have anything to do with the new year period.. I will normally leave the first week of January - in order to start over studies the 15th in Oakland.

Thank you all.. Anyway.

Generally, no. The earlier you book, the cheaper.
But they're saying prices are supposed to drop this week or next, and stay low over the winter, so this, for once might be the exception.

oh also when I was trying to leave SF, the 3 days I went back to see if there was a seat as stand by, I waited for 5 hours each day, only to have to turn around and head back into the city. But now you can take the BART underground train service. At that time, I didn't have to worry about a place to stay, since I had to stay longer, since I would head back into the city and stay at my mom's. But in Hamburgh, they didn't let me sleep in the airport so I had to get a hotel. It ended up costing me more in time and headaches. But from Amsterdam to SF it was not a problem but I was there at Schipol at 6:30 in the morning, somebody didn't show up and I got on for about 100 euros. But coming back 5 days later then I had hoped for really kind of sucked. So I have not done it since. A friend of mine visiting from Los Angeles did it recently to come visit me here in France. It took him 3 flights to get here, he was up for 50 hours and it only cost $360 in total.
I prefer flying direct 11 hours from Paris, 10 hours from Amsterdam. Time for me is more valuable.

if you got time and you are willing to get on a couple of flights, then it's cheaper.
But with me, it didn't pay off. From Amsterdam to Oakland it was not a problem but from SF to Amsterdam it was a problem I had to go back 3 days in a row, and that was when there was no Bart train service back to SF, so it got expensive. When I finally got on a plane it was to Hamburg, so then I had to get another flight which took me 2 days in total to get back to A'dam. But now Martinair no longer flys to Oakland or SF. And most flights from Belgium such as Holland, Paris now only fly into SF International airport.
Normally I do get a ticket at the last minute, and it still seems a good deal if I call in to the airline I want to fly with first. I had a few times that I had to call the day before and twice it was a good deal and once it was expensive. But After January 8 or the 12, can't remember right now, need caffeine, but for Europeans, you must send in a waver form before leaving Europe to Homeland Security in the US, online, basically the same green colored card that non US residents fill out in the plane on the way over on the flight. See the Homeland Security site. Also if you don't have your new biometric passport, that can also delay you. In Holland and Germany it is not so bad with the paperwork and time, but in France if you have an exsisting passport you have to show proof of a plane ticket to get a biometric passport issued. Once approved it can take 3 to 4 weeks to be sent back to you. I don't know how it will be in Belgium, but you must have the new biometric passports as of January 1 to go to the US. Again check that as well on the Homeland Security page. But please let me know how this biometric passport is being dealt with in Belgium, since it does seem to be different in each country, no thanks to the EEC....!

Sometimes during unpopular travel times flights get cheap between 14-7 days in advance. The day of your flight though is rarely a good deal unless you have some connection to go standby (family members in the airline?)... I usually start looking at international fares about 3 weeks in advance of when I need to go. If they seem to be getting lower day by day by the time it's exactly 2 weeks in advance, I might hold off until the 7 day cut off depending on how important the trip is vs. the price.
