Hello everyone!

My best friend and I are heading to Paris and Amsterdam this fall. We will be there from the end of Sept to early Oct, for approx 2 weeks.
If anyone has any leads on air carriers, or a good route to take, I'm all ears!

Thanks for the help~

  • Hi Promise....I'm leaving on the 3rd of Sept. from L.A. and have done a lot of research, it's actually driving me bats! Anyway, I have found that the cheapest is aer lingus, which puts you into Dublin, the first port to Europe. For a little more you can go directly to Amsterdam, a wonderful city, I used to work in a hotel there. You will love it. A cheap way to travel around the city is by bike, rent one, there are thousands. Since you only have 2 weeks I would suggest spending at least 7 days in Paris, if you have never been. It is a very yummy city and a lot to do there. Once you get on the continent, you can fly Ryan air very cheaply. I am going for a month and am trying to squeeze way too much into my trip, but I will be alone so not bogged down by someone else's desires.
Enjoy...laugh...drink great wines and eat a lot!....

  • I've done this route more times than I care to admit... My favorite (and, I think the overall price is generally cheapest) is to get an open jjaws ticket, goint into Paris or Amsterdam and out of the other city. Then take the Thalys, fast train, between Paris and Amsterdam. It's actually as fast as the planes, since it takes you from Amsterdam Central Station to Paris Gare du Nord, both in the middle of town rather than in the outskirst where the airports are.

If you really iwill stay in Paris for an entire week, look into apartment rentals. They are far far cheaper than hotels and you get a kitchen so that when you go to the cool Parisian markets you can actually buy stuff and bring it back to cook a meal, or two. Saves money and it's fun, if you can cook. If you want any tips on either city, send me a message and tell me what you're interested in. I don't know either city like the locals, but I do know my way around the art scene and a few other things. Glad to share, if y9ulike, but I don't want to bore everyone here with my suggestions.

although i'm not going to either city on my upcoming flight i'll be over there for a while and may try to visit both at some point. suggestions are MORE than welcome on-thread (some of us use these tribes as reference material.)

krishna, if you worked in amsterdam i'd love to hear you chime in as well.
      • Ahhhhhhh Amsterdam....
A couple of things I would suggest....You must see the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum if you like art. Go to the American Hotel for their Tomato soup on a chilly day, it is the best I've ever had, to just see the Art Deco restaurant, the hotel is amazing, pricey, but if you want a treat there is nothing like a room over looking a water way there. There are cheaper rooms over by the red light district. Hostels etc.

Most people just think of Amsterdam as a red light area and koffiehouses (smokes), for a look at a less touristy view go to the Albert Cuyp flea market it is on Albert Cuyrstraat in the north end of the city...open Mom- Sat go early 8-9am where local people shop...there are vendors from all over. If you have a little kitchen where you are staying, you can pick up fresh food there. You must try fresh herring from the street vendors, it is a street snak there. Speaking of the koffiehouses, they don't see alcohol, but you can get your smokes there, it is illegal, on the streets, but accepted in the places there if you are into that. Amsterdam is a very accepting city and open minded.

The only other thing I would have to do is take a candle lit night cruise on the canals, it's beautiful lights will enchant you. It depends what time of year you go, there is a bit of rain in the fall, sometimes just in the morning. I like the fall, the tourists have gone. I would rent a bike that is a great way to see the city. You also have to have the french fries there, they are served in a paper cone with a big glop of whipped mayo, sounds gross but is just yummy! All in all I love Amsterdam, even though I had my purse stolen there once, and a brand new Nikon, my fault, it's like any where else, ya gotta watch your stuff, I was slackin'
