As far as tickets go, Mexicana should run you just a little cheaper than the $195 you mention. (I found $186 on Kayak). But anything under $200 is already cheap.
You might consider a Mexican discount airline to get further north--to Tijuana or Mexicali, for example--and then head to LA overland. That might save you some. Try Click Mexicana, Volaris, or one of the others. -

i dont know if i did it the cheapest way, but i hitched up to san antonio and took a flight from there for 137$.
did i do good?
