Re: Amsterdam airport
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 3:54 PMI flew into Amsterdam airport about ten years ago. Busses were convenient and easy, but I was going into a smaller town outside of Amsterdam rather than into the city. I would imagine that busses would be even easier getting into Amsterdam. Check a "Let's Go" or "Lonely Planet" guide and they'll tell you the frequency and which busses to take.
If you're going to be in Holland for awhile....you might consider bringing your bike, buying/renting a bike while you're there. Bicycles are a great way to get around.
Have a great trip! -

Re: Amsterdam airport
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 6:43 PMThanks! We're just going to be there for several hours on a layover and need to know if we have enough time to actually go into town. I'll see if I can find that Lonely Planet at the library. Don't want to buy that book if it's just for a quick visit. Wish it were going to be longer. -

Sat, November 11, 2006 - 7:20 AMThanks for the tip. However, we're trying to find out before we get there so we can make plans if necessary. I Googled it, but most of the web sites I found were in Dutch! Uhm, and I can't read Dutch! -

Re: Amsterdam airport
Sat, November 11, 2006 - 10:21 AMI was in Amsterdam in 2005 and a friend of mine went just a few months ago. Don't even worry about this issue. There's a train stop right at Schiphol airport that takes you straight to Centraal Station. It's something like a 15-20 minute ride. The only problem you might encounter is not having small change in euros to buy a ticket with. You should either get some small change before your trip or be prepared to buy a coffee or something to get change.
Overall, it's incredibly easy to figure this out once you arrive. Don't worry. There are big signs in English pointing the way. I've been to around 10 international airports, and Schiphol probably has the best/easiest public transit into town. -

Re: Amsterdam airport
Mon, November 13, 2006 - 9:56 AMJust buy your tickets with a credit card- you don't need change (if you want to use cash you can bring big notes too). Change is never an issue in developped countries or in airports most anywhere -

Re: Amsterdam airport
Mon, November 13, 2006 - 10:34 AMto be extra sure, let your credit card company know you'll be traveling then so they don't decline your card! -

Re: Amsterdam airport
Fri, November 24, 2006 - 3:26 PMAbout ten years ago I spent a few weeks visiting friends in Haarlem. It was a nice base for exploring the area and close enough that I could ride my bicycle into Amsterdam to visit the sights. -

Re: Amsterdam airport
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 10:22 AMDon't rely on your credit cards at for buying train tickets. I tried to use mine and it wouldn't work. I could use my card other places but the machine didn't like it at all. I have heard the machines are finicky. One of my friends said if one machine doesn't work try another. Still small change in euros seems to be the best way to go. It is a quick train ride into town and there are tons of trams available right outside the Centraal Station. How long is your stopover?

Re: Amsterdam airport
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 1:08 PMWalk out of the "Airport" area into the shopping center...pass thru. You will find yourself in the Railstation hall- you can purchase tickets for the train to Centraal Station from a window or a machine...you may need euros to buy at window...Check the track the next train to Centraal Station leaves, take the escalator down to the track, wait patiently, get on train, make sure you get off at the CENTRAAL Station not one of the other stations in Amsterdam, keep your head down and walk right past those junkies and hustlers...buy a tram ticket from the folks outside and get on a tram and get out of downtown... So, very simple!
Hey, it's cold there!

Re: Amsterdam airport
Mon, February 12, 2007 - 2:37 PMThanks, everyone! We're back from our trip. We were too exhausted to even attempt to go into town on our layover so we hung at the airport, ate, and slept.
However, on our return trip through Amsterdam our flight was cancelled and we had to stay overnight so after checking into the hotel we jumped on the train and headed into town. We only had a couple of hours of daylight so we just started walking from Centraal Station and hit a pub where we asked the locals what we should and where to go.
Everyone's tips were very helpful and at least I had some inkling of how to get into town when we got there. Thank you!
