Hi, first i'd like to say that this has to do more with the destination rather than how im getting there. I have some airline credit thats already paid for, i'm just having trouble deciding the most ideal place to go.
I'm thinking Mexico or Guatemala.
I'm a 20 year old hip, animal loving student that has traveled internationally with parents, but never alone, as i will, in January, right after Christmas.
Dates, times, locations are flexible.
I'd like to go somewhere that i can sleep outside and is relatively safe. THat i can eat from the trees, lounge on coasts, bathe in the oceans, see ruins and archaeological sites, and not spend very much money having the greatest time of my life. There are places like this, im almost posative. It;s a rather simple goal to achieve i think and feel.
So, What i am asking you is, Based on these things, Have you gone somewhere that offers such marvels?
I checked out Cabo San LUcas and it looked beautiful, very resorty, but beautiful.
TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW, EVERYTHING IS WELCOME!! THANK YOU SO MUCH BEAUTIFUL ADVENTURERS!! and blessed be.

i bet you want to go to TULUM, meet up with the other 20 year old hip, animal loving students who have traveled internationally with their parents but never alone, as they will, in january, right after christmas, and whose dates, times, and locations are flexible, and who would like to go somewhere that they can sleep outside and is relatively safe... that they can eat from the trees, lounge on coasts, bathe in oceans, see ruins and archeological sites, and not spend very much money having the greatest time of their lives... and then take it from there as you head down the coast of the yucatan peninsula to some more remote beaches, or maybe west through chiapas, via the howler monkeys and mayan ruins at PALENQUE, and then down into guatemala where you soak up local color in mountain towns and hang out on LAKE ATITLAN for very cheap... or maybe you want to do it the other way around and start in guatemala with the beaches of mexico as yr ending point. either way...

for a first trip, a beach trip, a cheap trip, this is classic.

hint: there is only one good beach in guatemala. for beaches, go to mexico.
note: i dont know anything about baja. a lot of people love it.

this is the view from the sandy beach at tulum

Tulum is beautiful, also very expensive (at least by mexican standards) and full of tourists. There are amazing beaches in Michoacán and Nayarit that aren't crowded and are super cheap! Maruata, Sayulita, Faro de Bucerías, etc. Also in Guerrero: Playa Ventura, Playa Paraíso and Isla de Pajaros are beautiful and fairly accesible. Oaxaca is amazing in all senses (also kind of expensive), but going there know isn't a good idea... Los Tuxtlas in Veracruz is also an extraordinarily beautiful region with lush rainforest, beach access and very interesting culture (one of the few afro-mexican enclaves), hardly any foreigners venture out there, but it's pretty safe and incredibly beautiful and CHEAP (a room on the beach costs $2 US a night in Montepío), you can take a route through Xalapa, then to the port of Veracruz, down through Tlacotalpan and to San Andrés Tuxtla, then head into the jungle from there...

Cuetzalan, in northern Puebla, is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been, it's a náhuatl/totonac town nested in cloud forest, sorrounded by mountains, rivers and the occasional pyramid, almost always shrouded in mist, like being in the clouds. It's very accesible, safe and you can get by with 5 bucks a day (food, lodging and possibly alcohol, literally). If you can, you should definitely check it out. It's easy to fit into any route going through central Mexico.

i spent some time in Baja....we stayed cheap without any reservations....a hotel in ensenada. then drove acorss mountains to san filipe...where we stayed in a beach under a palapa, with a tent for 8.00 a night at a place along highway...Petes...2.00 shower, and 1.00 beer under a nice shade...with big screen TV, outside!!!! They had a nice (cheap and clean) restaurant.

we also went sea fishing in ensenada....WORTH EVERY CENT.. i caught a 3..5 fooot baracuda, and a few othr fish...we had them sliced up, took them with us to petes...i made garlic butter, and cooked them on little grill on the beach, unreal.....

we had a great time with a hidden places tour book and just ran around....it was the best!!!!

I lived in Oaxaca and worked as a whitewater guide in 2000. Travelled extensively around Mexico, due to the fact that my boyfriend at the time has an aunt (British) living/working in Guanajuato and teaching at the University.

            Oaxaca:
The Bahias de Huatulco, although known for being a tourist development, are actually quite gorgeous. There's a small town called "La Crucecita," only a half mile inland from Bahia Chahue. There are 13 Bahias, with Tangolunda and Santa Cruz the most developed when we left (I can't speak for it now). Oaxaca was amazing. Puerto Escondido is like Venice Beach migrated to Mex, so if you're looking for traditional culture and not a bunch of students on spring break, don't spend too much time there; however, it was fun to visit and watch some kickass surfers. Mazunte has a tour of their sea-turtle farm, and it's worth visiting. Most of my days were occupied with discovering hidden Bahias and hanging out with other guides in the area. The Rio Copalita has some good Class 3/4. Any taxis you take here, take them "colectivo"- it's like carpooling, and it's cheaper.

Chiapas was stunning as well. Zapatista/Army activity was at an all-time low when I was living there since Vicente Fox had just been elected President. San Cristobal de las Casas: awesome. Go to Palenque if you visit this state.

Keep in mind that bus rides are LOOOONG.
            -But-
The week before Christmas, my bf at the time and I were trying to get a bus from DF(Mexico City) to Guanajuato. 6-8 hour ride. Well, since it was a busy week, the only bus left was a higher-end line. We paid $23/person. What we got: full-reclining sleeping chairs, really nice, fresh meals, and we took the trip at night so we were able to sleep while driving. If I had known such a bus line existed, I would have done that from the beginning. The ride from DF to Oaxaca was 20 hours long... uck.

Have a fantastic time. Don't be afraid to talk to people. Don't get caught with anything illegal on you- the laws there are Napoleonic and you don't want to hang out in jail.

My current boyfriend lived in Cancun and taught SCUBA for a year. He said it was quite expensive due to the spring-break ideology attached to the place.

Best of luck, and happy travels.

              Star,

My girl and I are heading to the Yukitan in Jan. We are wanting to check out Palenque from Tulum and then meet up with the rest of our crew in Balamku. What is the name of the nicer bus line that you used? I'd like to see if there are any routes from those locations to Palenque.

              Thanks

    Hey Glorious,
I'm planning much the same kinda trip come feb 2007. I'm coming from Vancouver Canada so I've got a few miles to cover before I get there. Let me know how you fare as it sounds like we're gonna be riding the same waves this coming year! :0)

The mayan ruins, Chiapas has lots of natural scenary, Mexico city is vibrant although kinda dangerous... Chihuahua has beautiful canyons, there are beutiful beaches like Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun although Cancun might be too touristic.

I'm probbaly a little late ,but Utila in the bay Ilslands in hondourus is a magnet for backpackers and the cheapest place in the world to get PADI certified. When I was there in 2000 I think it was 6 hours underwater plus room and board for 4 days was 165$.
