Re: Europe this summer from west coast to dublin less than $1000
Tue, March 27, 2007 - 11:03 AMi flew home to ireland last year on Aer Lingus for the first time, and had a terrible flight! almost half way to dublin we had to turn round and fly back to nyc because of engine troubles, i was on the loo, and nearly fell out of the door when we lost pressure! LMAO!!!! instead of allowing us off the plane so we could have our tea, they made us set on the thing and nearly starve for 2 bloody hours. and if you have ever flown out of JFK, then you know it can take an additional hour or so just to get off the ground so about 4 hours later we were in the sky and we got our tea 6 hours after we left the ground the first time!!!!!!! starving irish people can be quite rowdy!!!!
i am sure many people have had lovely flights with them, and my flight back to the US was fine. they aren't as free with the drinks as US carriers are unless they have changed. i got one drink there and one drink back, i remember beer for a cost flowed freely, but no hard stuff. i don't really drink so that was fine. tea and coffee was it though.
go for it i say, basics is all you need to get you there and back, save your money for lovely ireland. are you going to be there all summer? if you get the chance, go up north. i am from Derry, all is well there, and it is beautiful!!!!!!! it will be well worth your effort!!!!! the glens are lovely in the summer!!!!!! -

Re: Europe this summer from west coast to dublin less than $1000
Tue, March 27, 2007 - 2:16 PMderry? catholic i presume? ;) (to let everyone else in on the joke--irish protestants usually call it "london-derry.") i'm not irish, just an amateur anthropologist.
...and about those drinks... u.s. carriers CHARGE for that now--which is why i fly european. european carriers often have free booze (both beer/wine and hard stuff.)
i think aer lingus doesn't have the best *service* record, but i didn't hear HORRIBLE things about them... -

Thu, March 29, 2007 - 12:01 AMi make no judgements because you identify as catholic. i'm trying to recall if i've ever actually MET an irish protestant... (my exposure to irish folk has been in the states.)

as are 99% of the irish i know. (that's just my limited experience, though.)
<but if i remember correctly the lads drinking were paying, i could be wrong though.>
possible. i'm just mentioning that u.s. carriers don't provide free booze anymore--hell, they're considering charging for MEALS. i have to admit i haven't flown to ireland (london, switzerland & spain) but i've flown on both swiss air & air new zealand and they both provided free booze on transatlantic flights--and they weren't stingy, either!
<i still say go for it, cheap and cheerful!!! kind of like my old car, if it gets you there and back!!!!!!>
i agree. -
